This site collates my writing and broadcast media exploring cinema from its beginnings to the present day. My work focuses on: film and media technologies; media, the environment, and climate change; gender, race, and class; identity and ethics; women in the creative industries; history and archives; and Star Wars. My most recent book, BFI Film Classics: The Empire Strikes Back, is available to order from Bloomsbury.

I'm a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic for outlets including BBC Scotland, Sight & Sound, The Mary Sue, and Birth Movies Death. I also have a PhD in Film, with over a decade's experience researching media history and communicating it to both professional and public audiences. I lecture in Film and Media at a UK university and have film programming experience, including as director of the Glasgow Feminist Arts Festival.

You can find out more about my research and interests (as well as my CV) under About. My Blog offers insights into my various projects, as well as analysis of screen media, and commentaries and advice on academic life. Under Media you can read, watch and download my writing and interviews. I also provide links to useful Resources for critics, researchers, students and other people interested in learning more about cinema and its histories.
