Citation as feminist practice

26/11/2018

Today, Issue 2 of MAI: Feminism of Visual Culture included my article 'Fuck the Canon (or, How Do You Solve a Problem Like von Trier): Teaching, Screening and Writing About Cinema in the Age of #MeToo.'

My article does not contain any citations and asks readers to believe my research findings and arguments without a methodology or evidence. I present my ideas without references both to draw attention to patriarchal academic practice and to remind readers about the incredibly difficult work that we ask survivors to do when we ask that they prove experiences of violence.

However, citation is also a form of feminist practice, and so I have included a list here (which will likely expand over time) of people whose activism, publications, conversations, ideas or feedback have inspired my thinking and without whose work I would not have written the article. Also, for any interested readers, a comment on my methodology: I did a rough count of directing, writing, producing, acting and editing credits on IMDb for all the men named in the article to produce the figure of 4000+. It does not account for one man having multiple credits on the same film.
